Year 4 Times Tables Test: What You Need to Know for 2021
The Year 4 times tables test is a new assessment introduced by the Government in 2017, initially scheduled for rollout across England and Wales in 2020. The test aims to determine each child’s ability to learn and remember their times tables fluently. It also enables schools to identify which students are struggling in maths so they can receive further support.

When is the Year 4 times tables test?
Pupils usually take the Year 4 times tables test toward the end of Year 4. However, there is no set date for the test. The DfE cancelled it due to primary school closures, and while is on the academic schedule for 2021, it will be optional for schools this year.
What times tables should Year 4 know?
The assessment will test students on their times tables up to 12×12. The test consists of 25 questions, and each child has precisely 6 seconds to submit their answer. Below you can see the style of the questions’ presentation.
The Multiplication Tables Check is supposed to take 5 minutes.
Is it possible to know which questions will appear in the Year 4 times tables test?
All the questions are selected at random from 2 x 2 to 12 x 12. The test’s algorithm is designed to show students more challenging multiplication questions from the six times table and above.
What is the pass mark for the Year 4 times tables test?
Each student will be given a score out of 25. There is currently no standard by which a pupil either passes or fails; the objective is to give teachers an idea of whether pupils require further support.
What resources are available to prepare for the Year 4 times tables test?
Below we’ve identified methods to help your child to prepare:
Build the times tables into your daily routine.
We advise setting aside 10–15 minutes per day to run through the times tables with your child. You might think about doing this while driving them to school to prepare them for the day ahead. Short but consistent practice is an excellent way to help keep your child’s mind sharp.
Take the time to use online resources.
Maths Frame has a version of the Year 4 times tables test which is available for free. This website also has several multiplication practice papers that are available to download for free here.
Consider using BBC Bitesize as a supplement to what your child is learning at school. BBC Bitesize is working with White Rose Maths to create a series of catch up lessons for Year 4 students. Use this term planner to view the entire curriculum.
What can parents do to help prepare for the Year 4 times tables test?
Every child is different; they learn at different speeds and understand multiplication differently from their peers.
Our online maths tutors understand this better than anyone. Our online maths courses will challenge your child where needed while providing additional support with topics they find harder to grasp.
Mastering times tables is a key maths skill, and the Year 4 times tables test is an opportunity for schools and parents to make sure that children are on track.
